Battle of the Books

What Is Battle of the Books?
Battle of the Books is a fun, free program for kids in grades 3 to 8. It gives kids the chance to compete against other schools to see who knows their books best! It's held at the Georgetown Branch.

When Is It?
A Round Robin of all participating Halton Hills schools will be held at the Georgetown Branch on Monday, April 2, 2011. A Grand Battle, where the top two scoring teams will compete to represent our community will be held on Tuesday April 24, 2011. And, a Regional Battle in which our winning teams will compete will be held in Oakville on Thursday, May 10, 2011 in Milton at Milton’s Centre for the Arts.

Who Plays?
Every school in Halton Hills has been invited to participate. Junior teams are made up of children in grades 3-5, and senior teams have students in grades 6-8.

How Is It Organized?
All teams will consist of a maximum of 9 members. Junior level teams will have up to three students from each of grades 3, 4 and 5. Senior level teams will have up to three students from each of grades 6, 7 and 8. A maximum of two students from each grade will play at any given time. Two teams will play against each other during a Round Robin. They are alternately asked questions based on books. A team has 30 seconds in which to give the correct author, title or character. If the question cannot be answered by the team then the opposing team has the chance to answer.

How Is It Run?
At the Round Robin, teams will each play an equal number of games and will earn points for naming correct book titles and authors. The teams with the highest cumulative score at the end of the Round Robin win. The top two junior and the top two senior teams will play against each other at the Grand Battle. The winning teams from the Grand Battle (one junior, one senior) will go on to represent Halton Hills at the Regional Battle.
